Leading government and military officials will pay their respects at the funeral of former Pakistani President and Army Chief General Pervez Musharraf, which takes place today in Karachi. The body of the late military ruler was transported from Dubai the night prior.

Musharraf passed away at the age of 79, due to complications from a rare organ disease called amyloidosis, as reported by his family in 2022.

The funeral will be attended by President Dr. Arif Alvi, Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee General Sahir Shamshad Mirza, the Governor of Sindh province, and other prominent government figures and politicians, according to Aziz-ur-Rehman, the Central Secretary General of Musharraf’s All-Pakistan Muslim League (APML) party

The body of General Pervez Musharraf and his family arrived in Karachi via a special flight from Dubai on Monday night, according to state-run Radio Pakistan.

Musharraf had a 37-year career in the military, before being appointed as army chief by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in 1998. The following year, he staged a military coup, citing deteriorating political and economic conditions in the country.

In 2002, Musharraf was elected as president, while also retaining his role as army chief, after a controversial national referendum in which he received over 90 percent of the vote. He resigned as army chief in 2007 and as president in 2008.

Musharraf subsequently lived in London but returned to Pakistan in 2013 to contest elections. However, he instead faced a slew of court cases and was subsequently banned for life from holding public office. He traveled to Dubai in 2016 to receive medical care, where he passed away on February 5 of that year.
