ISLAMABAD: On Wednesday, the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) opened Pakistan’s first 5G Innovation Lab, a collaboration between the private sector and the public sector.

The innovation lab’s goal is to assess 5G’s usefulness via a social-economic perspective and introduce homegrown solutions for transportation, health, education, and business that are appropriate for the region.

In order to determine the influence and utility of 5G telecom services in Pakistani society, the “innovation lab” is a research project supported by Jazz, the largest telecom operator in the nation, and Huawei Technologies.

It was emphasized that the project will assist researchers in working on prospective use cases for 5G in the disciplines of artificial intelligence (AI), augmented reality, and virtual reality by exploiting its high bandwidth, low latency, and advanced security.

The healthcare business, manufacturing and service industries, agriculture, security, disaster management, entertainment, and the public sector will all be affected by this.

The 5G Innovation Lab was officially opened by Mohsin Mushtaq, the Federal Secretary for Information Technology and Telecom (MoITT), who also made the following statement: “The lab will play a pivotal role in helping us build an ecosystem to explore 5G-enabled use cases of IT and telecom technologies in various sectors.”

The lab will assist in leading the realisation of use cases for the development of the 5G co-innovation ecosystem. The speakers emphasised that, in contrast to 4G, 5G usage is not just restricted to phones and other connected devices but also has a wider application as a catalyst for the digitalization of other industries. “There is a need to look at the future of communications where 5G will have a key role to play,” said Kaan Terziolu, CEO of VEON Group.
