Shah stated during the award ceremony that she started learning French when she was just 12 years old and then moved to the US to pursue her education.

Once she returned to Pakistan in 1995, she got involved with the Alliance Francaise in Karachi.

Shah has authored five novels in her writing career, the most recent of which, Before She Sleeps, a feminist movement dystopian story, was released in 2018. The Monsoon War, its follow-up, will be made available in May 2019.

She also contributes to the New York Times and Dawn, and her literary work—which encompasses both fiction and nonfiction—has frequently won honors from all over the world.
