The Sindh Police has acquired modern CCTV cameras with facial and license plate recognition technology.

The Central Police Office’s (CPO) Command and Control Center was continuously monitored in line with the strict security measures implemented during Muharram.

In order to watch the city, particularly the central procession, some 2,200 CCTV cameras were deployed throughout the city, and six monitoring rooms were set up alongside the CCC, according to Tabassum Abid, director of information technology (IT) for the Sindh Police.

She stated that on 10 Muharram, the central procession and its environs were captured by modern CCTV cameras with facial and vehicle number plate recognition as part of a pilot initiative.

The cameras, which were connected to the Criminal Record Office (CRO), helped catch a number of criminals that day. The cameras provide an alert when a criminal is spotted, and the criminal history of that individual—including the offense, arrest, bail information, and other details—is displayed on the screen.

Abid also mentioned that the installation of vehicle number plate recognition cameras had also commenced. These cameras issue an alert when they detect a vehicle that is either stolen, was previously stolen, or was reported as ‘stolen’ to the police. They also display linked traffic offenses and other details, including seat belt violations, on the screen.

In order to enhance the efficiency of the CCC, the director stated that additional cameras of both types will be deployed across the city, in addition to the initial 20 cameras of each type.
