Piaggio, an Italian scooter manufacturer, announced on Monday the formation of a collaboration with Honda Motor Co., KTM AG, and Yamaha Motor Co. to promote the use of swappable batteries in electric motorbikes and light electric cars.
The Swappable Batteries Motorcycle Consortium (SBMC) intends to expand the usage of light electric vehicles like scooters, mopeds, and motorbikes, as well as assist more sustainable battery management, according to a joint declaration.
It will concentrate on developing worldwide standard technical requirements for swappable batteries and will focus on topics such as battery life, charging times, infrastructure, and prices.
The consortium’s members stated that they would welcome others joining them in order to spread standards to as many firms as feasible.
“Urban mobility is in the midst of a delicate transition to electrification. Motorbikes will continue to play an important role as a result of this consortium,” stated Piaggio Chief Strategy and Product Officer Michele Colaninno.
Yoshishige Nomura, Chief Officer of Honda Motorcycle Operations, stated that the consortium’s goals were to make electric motorcycles more comfortable for customers, as their “usage on a wide scale may significantly contribute to the establishment of a more sustainable society.”
