70% of those killed in Gaza are women and children: UN Security Council
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterLinkedinWhatsapp

Amid the Israel-Gaza conflict, a staggering 70% of the reported 11,000 casualties are women and children, painting a grim picture of the human toll. Shockingly, a child loses their life every 10 minutes. Pregnant women, facing unimaginable circumstances, undergo C-sections without the comfort of anesthesia. Moreover, the overcrowded shelters are witnessing a disturbing rise in gender-based violence against women and girls.

As is unfortunately common in humanitarian crises, the impact on women and children is disproportionately severe. The Country Director of CARE West Bank and Gaza recently engaged with experts from the UN Security Council working on Women, Peace, and Security. During this critical meeting, the director highlighted the devastating consequences on women and children and passionately advocated for an urgent ceasefire to halt the escalating humanitarian crisis.

This plea underscores the immediate need for attention to the dire situation, with the hope that a ceasefire will not only alleviate the suffering but also create space for essential humanitarian aid. In crises of this nature, where conflict exacts a heavy toll on civilian populations, global leaders and humanitarian organizations must collaborate to address the root causes, facilitate a peaceful resolution, and ensure the protection and well-being of all, especially the most vulnerable members of society.
