Saudi Arabia’s Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman bin Abdulaziz has conferred the King Abdulaziz Medal of Excellent Class on Pakistan’s Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal Asim Munir, in recognition of his distinguished efforts to strengthen Pakistan-Saudi Arabia relations, particularly in the defence and security domains.
According to the Saudi Press Agency and Saudi Gazette, the honour was presented during a formal meeting in Riyadh, where Prince Khalid received Field Marshal Munir. The medal, one of the kingdom’s most prestigious national honours, is awarded to individuals who have rendered outstanding services to Saudi Arabia or significantly contributed to its strategic interests.
The Saudi Defence Minister congratulated Field Marshal Munir on his appointment as Pakistan’s Chief of Defence Forces and expressed confidence in continued cooperation between the two militaries. During the meeting, both sides reviewed the historic and brotherly relations between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia and discussed ways to further enhance defence collaboration, regional security coordination, and strategic cooperation.
In a statement posted on social media platform X, Prince Khalid said the medal was awarded on the directive of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, highlighting Field Marshal Munir’s role in advancing bilateral cooperation and reinforcing the long-standing partnership between the two countries.
Pakistan’s military media wing, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), later confirmed the development, stating that the discussions also covered evolving geopolitical challenges, counter-terrorism cooperation, and broader regional security dynamics. ISPR described the award as Saudi Arabia’s highest national honour, underscoring its significance.
“The honour recognises Field Marshal Asim Munir’s distinguished military service, leadership, and central role in enhancing defence cooperation, strategic coordination, and institutional linkages between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia,” the ISPR statement said. It added that the recognition also reflects his contributions toward regional peace and stability, including sustained collaboration in counter-terrorism efforts.
The development comes amid deepening strategic ties between Islamabad and Riyadh. Earlier this year, both countries signed a Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement, pledging collective security cooperation in the event of external aggression. Saudi Arabia has also expressed interest in further elevating its defence partnership with Pakistan.
Observers view the award as a strong diplomatic signal of Saudi Arabia’s trust in Pakistan’s military leadership and a reaffirmation of the two countries’ shared commitment to regional stability, defence collaboration, and long-term strategic partnership.
