The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Thursday ordered the removal of Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri from office, ruling that he did not meet the eligibility criteria required for appointment as a judge.
According to the court’s verdict, Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri was not eligible to practice as an advocate at the time of his judicial appointment. Consequently, the court directed that he be de-notified from his position. A copy of the verdict has been ordered to be forwarded to the Ministry of Law for necessary action.
During the hearing, the registrar of Karachi University appeared before the Islamabad High Court and presented official records related to Justice Jahangiri’s academic credentials. The registrar informed the court that Tariq Jahangiri had appeared in the LLB examination using a forged enrolment number and had passed the examinations during a period when he was under suspension.
The registrar further stated that no academic records were available from the relevant college and confirmed that Karachi University has cancelled Justice Tariq Jahangiri’s law degree. Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri did not appear before the court during the proceedings.
Meanwhile, Justice Tariq Jahangiri has filed an appeal in the Constitutional Court against a December 9 decision of a two-member bench of the IHC. In his petition, he contended that the application filed against him in the Islamabad High Court was not maintainable.
He requested the Constitutional Court to dismiss the writ petition filed against him, challenging the legal basis of the proceedings that led to the IHC’s ruling.
