Motherboard Costs Set to Increase as Hardware Industry Faces New Price Pressures

Surging Component Costs
At the absolute operational center of this impending price adjustment is the skyrocketing cost of manufacturing materials. According to supply-chain reports from the Board Channels forum, the printed circuit boards (PCBs) used in consumer motherboards are expected to see a price surge of at least 50% in 2026. Additionally, the costs of other essential components—including copper, surface-mounted capacitors, controller chips, and power-delivery VRMs—have risen significantly, compounding the financial pressure on hardware makers.

Market Slump and Shipment Declines
Adding to these supply-chain pressures, the DIY PC market is currently experiencing a sustained period of weak demand. Motherboard shipments have plummeted across the industry, with major brands anticipating double-digit drops in overall volume. Because manufacturers are selling fewer units, they are forced to distribute their fixed development, production, and logistics costs across a much smaller product base, prompting them to raise retail prices to maintain their operational viability.

Lack of Consumer Incentives
The broader PC hardware ecosystem is currently exacerbating this decline in demand. CPU manufacturers have provided little incentive for PC builders to upgrade their hardware this year, offering incremental refreshes rather than compelling generational leaps. Furthermore, the high cost of memory (RAM) and other components continues to discourage consumers from building new systems, leaving the DIY market facing substantial headwinds heading into the latter half of the year.
