Punjab Launches eTransit App and T-Cash Card for Cashless Commuting
In a major step toward digitizing public infrastructure and enhancing urban mobility, the Government of Punjab has officially introduced the eTransit Punjab App and the T-Cash Card. Spearheaded by the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) in collaboration with the Punjab Transport Department and the Punjab Mass Transit Authority (PMA), this landmark initiative is designed to transition the province’s public transit network into a fully modernized, secure, and cashless ecosystem.
The new digital payment framework aims to phase out legacy paper tickets and physical tokens across mass transit systems. By offering commuters a unified digital platform for fare payments, real-time tracking, and account management, Punjab is taking a bold leap toward smart governance and urban efficiency.
A One-Card Solution: Understanding the T-Cash Card
At the heart of this public transit overhaul is the T-Cash Card, a versatile, multi-purpose smart card engineered to streamline daily travel across the province.
Unlike traditional fare passes that were limited to specific routes or train systems, the T-Cash Card functions as an all-in-one payment tool:
Unified Mass Transit Pass: Commuters can use a single T-Cash Card across various public transport services, including the Orange Line Metro Train, Metro Bus networks (in Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Multan), electric bus routes, and feeder bus services.
Tap-and-Go Convenience: Built-in Near Field Communication (NFC) technology allows passengers to board vehicles and pass through station turnstiles with a quick card tap, eliminating long waiting lines at ticket counters.
Dual Functionality: Beyond transit fares, the card integrates banking features, allowing users to make everyday retail purchases at Point of Sale (POS) terminals or withdraw cash at ATMs.
Targeted Welfare & Student Passes: Special student-dedicated T-Cash Cards have been introduced to grant subsidized or free travel, ensuring affordable access to educational institutions for youth across the province.
With an affordable issuance fee of just PKR 130, the T-Cash Card provides an accessible financial tool for daily commuters across diverse economic backgrounds.
Smart Commuting via the eTransit Punjab App
To complement the physical card, the eTransit Punjab App serves as the central digital hub for passengers. Available on mobile platforms, the application empowers commuters with comprehensive control over their daily journeys:
Digital Wallet Top-Ups: Passengers can instantly recharge their T-Cash Wallet using mobile banking apps, debit/credit cards, or Interbank Funds Transfer (IBFT) without visiting a physical kiosk.
Real-Time Journey Planning: The app provides live updates on bus arrival and departure times, helping passengers minimize wait times at stations.
Route & Delay Information: Commuters receive instant notifications regarding schedule modifications, traffic disruptions, or route updates across the transit network.
QR-Based Travel: In addition to physical cards, the app supports smartphone-based QR scanning (including PayZen options) for rapid digital boarding.
Accelerating Punjab’s Digital Transformation
This transport modernization drive forms a core pillar of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s vision for sustainable, technology-driven public governance. During recent high-level transport department briefings, the provincial government emphasized that adopting contactless electronic ticketing is crucial for building future-ready cities.
Eliminating physical cash transactions within the transit system provides multiple operational advantages:
Transparency & Revenue Accountability: Digital tracking ensures exact fare collection, curbing revenue leakage and improving financial management for transport authorities.
Reduced Congestion at Terminals: Eliminating token counters reduces queue times during peak rush hours, creating a smoother commute for hundreds of thousands of daily passengers.
Environmental Sustainability: Replacing paper tickets with digital options reduces waste, complementing the provincial government’s concurrent rollout of zero-emission electric buses and electric rickshaws.
How Citizens Can Get Started
Citizens looking to adopt the new payment system can register easily through a simple process:
Download & Register: Install the eTransit Punjab App from the official app store and complete user registration using a valid CNIC and mobile number.
Apply for T-Cash: Request a physical T-Cash Card directly through the app or website, selecting a convenient metro or mass transit station for pickup.
Load & Travel: Top up the account digitally or at designated station terminals, tap at the turnstiles, and enjoy a hassle-free, cashless commute across Punjab.
