SEOUL — Samsung has officially expanded its software commitment for its latest wearable lineup, confirming that the new Galaxy Watch 9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 will receive five major Wear OS upgrades alongside five years of security patches.

Announced following the company’s Unpacked event in London, this move sets a new benchmark for software longevity in the smartwatch industry. The expanded commitment ensures both wearables will remain fully supported through 2031 (up to Wear OS 12), significantly outperforming competitors like Google’s Pixel Watch lineup, which currently offers a three-year update guarantee.

Key Takeaways from Samsung’s Announcement

Extended Timeline: Moving beyond its previous standard of four OS updates, Samsung now guarantees 5 full years of both Wear OS upgrades and security patches for the Galaxy Watch 9 series.

Launch Software: Both smartwatches ship out of the box running Wear OS 7 with Samsung’s customized One UI 9 Watch interface overlay.

Powered by Snapdragon Wear Elite: The leap in software support is enabled by the new 3nm Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear Elite platform, giving both models the processing headroom and efficiency required for future feature rollouts over half a decade.

Outpacing Competitors: While Google guarantees 3 years of operating system updates for the Pixel Watch family and Apple’s support timelines vary, Samsung now offers one of the clearest and longest support guarantees in the wearable market.

Software Support Landscape Across Major Smartwatches

Samsung’s updated firmware policy places its newest wearables at the top of the Android ecosystem for software longevity:

Samsung Galaxy Watch 9 / Ultra 2: 5 Years of major Wear OS upgrades and security updates (Supported through 2031 up to Wear OS 12).

Samsung Galaxy Watch 8 Series / Original Watch Ultra: 4 Years of major OS updates and 5 years of security patches (Supported through 2029 up to Wear OS 10).

Google Pixel Watch Lineup: 3 Years of guaranteed operating system and security updates from original release dates.

Why Extended Support Matters for Smartwatches

As premium smartwatch prices increase—with the Galaxy Watch 9 starting at $379 and the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 at $699—consumers are holding onto their wearable devices longer.

Extended software support ensures users receive:

Ongoing Security: Protection against emerging vulnerabilities and software risks through 2031.

New Feature Rollouts: Access to future One UI Watch interface improvements, updated health algorithms, and expanded app compatibility.

Resale Value: Higher long-term device value for users looking to trade in or sell their smartwatches down the line.

Upgraded Hardware to Match a 5-Year Lifespan

To ensure the physical hardware holds up over a five-year lifecycle, Samsung built both models with heavy-duty specifications and premium materials:

Galaxy Watch Ultra 2: Designed for extreme endurance, featuring a lightweight titanium frame, IP68/IP69K water and dust resistance, a 40m diving certification, a peak display brightness of 5,000 nits, and a massive 800mAh battery. It also includes 2GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage.

Galaxy Watch 9: Available in 40mm and 44mm sizes, featuring an armored aluminum chassis, up to 3,000 nits display brightness, 32GB of storage, upgraded BioActive health tracking sensors, and FDA-cleared wellness tools including sleep apnea detection.

“By committing to five full years of major operating system upgrades, Samsung is bringing smartphone-level software longevity to the wearable ecosystem—ensuring devices remain secure, functional, and feature-rich well into the next decade.”
