WhatsApp has launched a new high-security feature called “Strict Account Settings” aimed at providing stronger protection against cyber threats. This feature is designed for users who face heightened risks, such as journalists and activists.
New Security Features
The “Strict Account Settings” mode can be activated with a single click within WhatsApp’s settings menu. Once enabled, it implements several protective measures:
- Blocking media and attachments from unknown contacts
- Disabling link previews in chats
- Silencing calls from unknown numbers
These restrictions target common methods used by hackers and surveillance actors to compromise accounts.
Context Within the Tech Industry
WhatsApp’s parent company, Meta Platforms, is joining other major technology firms in offering enhanced security options for users at risk. Apple introduced “Lockdown Mode” in 2022, which provides extreme protection by limiting message attachments, link previews, FaceTime calls, and web browsing. Similarly, Alphabet’s Android platform offers “Advanced Protection Mode” that restricts app downloads and other functionalities to improve security.
Expert Perspectives
John Scott-Railton, a researcher specializing in defending civil society figures from hacking, welcomed WhatsApp’s new security mode. He highlighted its importance in safeguarding dissidents and activists and expressed hope that other technology companies would adopt similar measures.
