Meta Platforms has announced it will temporarily block teenagers from accessing AI characters across all its applications worldwide. This decision comes as the company works on releasing an updated, safer version tailored for teen users.
Temporary Suspension for Teen Users
Starting in the coming weeks, teens will no longer be able to interact with AI characters on Meta’s platforms. The company stated this suspension will last until the new experience, designed specifically for minors, is ready to launch.
Enhanced Safety Features and Parental Controls
The upcoming version of AI characters for teens will include parental controls, allowing guardians to manage their children’s interactions with these chatbots. Meta previewed these controls in October, which enable parents to disable private chats between teens and AI characters. However, these controls have not yet been implemented.
Content Guidelines Based on PG-13 Standards
Meta has committed to aligning its AI experiences for teenagers with the PG-13 movie rating system. This approach aims to prevent minors from encountering inappropriate or provocative content during their interactions with AI characters.
Regulatory Context
Increasing scrutiny from U.S. regulators has pressured AI companies to address potential risks posed by chatbots, especially concerning minors. Previous reports highlighted that Meta’s AI rules allowed some provocative conversations with underage users, prompting calls for stricter safeguards.
