Pakistan has taken a significant step forward in artificial intelligence with the launch of ‘Qalb’, the largest Urdu language AI model to date. Developed by Taimoor Hassan, a Pakistani student currently studying in the United States, this large language model (LLM) is designed to enhance AI capabilities for Urdu speakers worldwide.
About Qalb: A Milestone in Urdu AI
Qalb has been trained on an extensive dataset of 1.97 billion tokens and evaluated using over seven international benchmarks. It surpasses existing Urdu-focused AI models in several key performance metrics, setting a new benchmark for natural language processing in Pakistan.
Developer Background
Taimoor Hassan is a serial entrepreneur with a record of launching and exiting 13 startups. He has previously won the Microsoft Cup and represented Pakistan on international platforms. Hassan completed his Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from FAST University and is currently pursuing a Master’s in Computer Science and Software Engineering at Auburn University, where he continues to work on advanced AI projects.
Bridging the Technological Gap for Urdu Speakers
With Urdu spoken by over 230 million people globally, Qalb aims to close the technological divide by enabling sophisticated AI solutions in the national language. The model is intended to support a variety of sectors including local businesses, startups, education platforms, digital services, and voice-based AI applications.
Team Effort and Future Plans
Hassan, along with his undergraduate teammates Jawad Ahmed and Muhammad Awais, is committed to continuously refining localized AI models tailored for specific industries. They believe these efforts could lead to significant technological breakthroughs for Pakistan.
“Technology is no longer confined to large corporations with big budgets,” Hassan stated. “With the right approach, even small teams can develop products that educate, automate, and serve millions.”
Impact and Vision
Qalb is poised to transform how AI is built and utilized in Pakistan, positioning the country as a leader in regional AI development. This initiative opens avenues for a new generation of digital experiences centered around the Urdu language.
