Pakistan’s futsal teams have made significant strides at the 2026 SAFF Championship held in Bangkok, Thailand, by securing their first-ever international victories. Both the men’s and women’s teams achieved historic wins, signaling progress for the sport in the country despite existing challenges.
Men’s Team Stages Comeback Against Bhutan
In a notable turnaround, Pakistan’s men’s futsal team overcame an early 2-0 deficit to defeat Bhutan 4-2 at the Hua Mak Indoor Arena. Bhutan’s Dawa Shering opened the scoring with two rapid goals, but Pakistan responded strongly in the second half. Hassan Zafar scored in the 28th minute to reduce the gap, followed by Asif Ahmed Chaudhry equalizing in the 32nd minute. Adnan Ashfaq then secured the victory with two goals in quick succession at the 34th and 35th minutes.
The starting lineup included Tahir Khan, Hassaan Zafar, Humza Nusrat, Nisar Hussain, and Salar Khan. The squad also featured substitutes Abdul Wadud, Humza Khan, Asif Ahmad, Adnan Ashfaq, Ali Agha, Abdul Hannan, Zaid Khan, Muhammad Elham, and Rajab Ali. This win came after Pakistan’s initial 7-1 loss to the Maldives in their opening match.
Women’s Team Claims Maiden International Win Over Sri Lanka
On the previous day, Pakistan’s women’s futsal team secured their first international victory by beating Sri Lanka 3-2. Azwa Chaudhry was instrumental in the win, scoring a hat-trick to lead her team to success.
Pakistan Football Federation Reacts to Historic Wins
The Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) celebrated the achievements on social media, highlighting the significance of these wins despite limited futsal infrastructure and various challenges in the country. PFF President Mohsen Gilani praised the dedication of players and coaches, stating that these milestones lay a foundation to elevate futsal’s status in Pakistan.
Additionally, the federation noted that Pakistani referees and coaches completed futsal courses during the championship, contributing to the sport’s development.
