Bangladesh tells ICC not playing in India for World Cup

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has formally requested the International Cricket Council (ICC) to relocate their upcoming T20 World Cup matches from India to Sri Lanka, citing security concerns amid ongoing political tensions between the two nations.

Background of the Dispute

The T20 World Cup is set to commence on February 7, with Bangladesh scheduled to play four group stage matches in India. However, the BCB has expressed strong reservations about traveling to India for the tournament.

The situation escalated after India compelled Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman to withdraw from the Indian Premier League (IPL) earlier this month. Mustafizur, who had previously participated in the IPL with other teams, was bought by Kolkata in the December auction for over $1 million. His forced exit sparked significant outrage in Bangladesh.

Political Context

Relations between India and Bangladesh have deteriorated following a mass uprising in Dhaka in 2024 that led to the removal of then-prime minister Sheikh Hasina, a close ally of New Delhi. India’s foreign ministry recently criticized what it described as persistent hostility against minorities in Bangladesh, further straining ties.

Bangladesh’s interim leader, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus, has challenged India’s characterization of the violence, suggesting it has been exaggerated.

BCB’s Position and ICC Response

During a recent video conference with the ICC, the BCB reiterated its request to have their World Cup matches moved outside India. The board emphasized its commitment to the safety and well-being of players, officials, and staff.

The ICC acknowledged that the tournament itinerary has already been announced and urged Bangladesh to reconsider their stance. However, the BCB’s position remains firm.

Discussions between the BCB and ICC are ongoing as both parties seek possible solutions, though the ICC has not issued an official comment on the matter.

Bangladesh’s Cricket Outlook

Led by captain Litton Das, Bangladesh currently holds the ninth position in the ICC T20 rankings. The team has participated in all nine editions of the T20 World Cup but has yet to reach the semi-final stage.
