Pakistan Calls for Enhanced Economic Dialogue with the US and Highlights Regional Security Issues

Amid ongoing efforts to strengthen bilateral ties, Pakistan has urged the United States to initiate a high-level economic dialogue at the earliest opportunity. Pakistan’s Ambassador to the US, Rizwan Saeed Sheikh, emphasized the need to pivot the relationship from a focus primarily on geopolitics to one grounded in geoeconomics.

Diplomatic Engagements with US Lawmakers

During his recent meetings with key members of the US Congress, including House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Brian Mast and House Armed Services Committee Chairman Mike Rogers, Ambassador Sheikh underlined 2026 as a pivotal year for transforming shared goals into concrete economic collaboration.

Key points raised by the Ambassador included:

  • A call for institutionalized dialogue on sectors such as energy, defense, minerals, information technology, and artificial intelligence.
  • Highlighting Pakistan’s competitive advantage as a low-cost, high-quality manufacturer with strong export potential in surgical instruments, textiles, and sports goods.
  • Encouraging a long-term, sustainable partnership based on economic cooperation, citing the international recognition of footballs produced in Sialkot, which have featured in five consecutive FIFA World Cups.

Positive Signals from US Officials

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has recently expressed optimism about deepening strategic ties with Pakistan, recognizing untapped opportunities and affirming Washington’s appreciation of Islamabad’s counter-terrorism collaboration. Rubio emphasized that enhancing the US-Pakistan relationship would not come at the cost of the strong, historic US-India partnership.

Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump noted recent trade tensions with India, describing a complex dynamic with Prime Minister Modi related to tariffs and energy disagreements.

Addressing Regional Security Concerns

Ambassador Sheikh also brought regional security issues to the forefront during discussions with US lawmakers, particularly focusing on threats emanating from Afghanistan-hosted terrorist groups. He cautioned that terrorist attacks within Pakistan rose by 40% in 2024 and increased by another 25% in 2025, attributing this surge to militants operating across the Afghan border.

Other security highlights included:

  • Concerns over the misuse of advanced weapons systems were abandoned following the US withdrawal from Afghanistan.
  • Warnings about the escalated tensions with India following May 2025 military clashes, describing India’s actions as aggressive and raising the risk of escalation beyond traditional conflict boundaries.
  • Highlighting the alarming use of dual-capable weapons in a region populated by 1.7 billion people and stressing the critical need for caution to avoid miscalculation.
  • Reiterating that the unresolved Kashmir dispute and the right to self-determination remain central to achieving lasting stability in South Asia.

Commitment to Ongoing Collaboration

Both Pakistan and US representatives agreed on establishing structured, regular channels for dialogue to advance mutual interests, focusing on both economic partnership and security cooperation. Ambassador Sheikh extended formal invitations to US congressional members to visit Pakistan to help strengthen parliamentary and people-to-people relations.

On social media platform X, Ambassador Sheikh shared details of his discussions, emphasizing the evolving Pakistan-US partnership and the importance of a stable cooperative relationship for regional and global peace.

He expressed gratitude for congressional support throughout a year of positive momentum in bilateral relations, advocating for 2026 to be designated as a year of action where good intentions are converted into tangible results.

Looking Ahead

With Pakistan advocating for a strategic shift toward economic collaboration and bringing pressing security concerns into the spotlight, 2026 is poised to be a critical year for defining the future trajectory of Pakistan-US relations. Both sides appear committed to fostering durable cooperation that benefits their respective nations while enhancing regional stability.
