Grok Restricts Image Generation to Paid Subscribers Following Controversy

Elon Musk’s AI chatbot, Grok, has disabled its image generation functionality for non-paying users on the social media platform X. This decision came after a wave of criticism surrounding the chatbot’s misuse in producing sexualized deepfake images involving women and children.

Background and Reason for Change

Developed by Musk’s company xAI, Grok had initially offered image creation and editing tools freely with usage limits. However, users exploited these features to create inappropriate and explicit images, including digitally removing clothing or depicting minors in sexualized contexts. The backlash intensified following several widespread reports and investigations by news agencies like Reuters and the BBC.

Actions Taken by Musk and Authorities

  • In response to the controversy, Grok announced that image generation and editing capabilities would now be exclusive to paying subscribers.
  • To activate these features, users must subscribe with personal and credit card information.
  • The European Commission declared the creation of sexualized images of women and children illegal and ordered X to preserve all related internal documents and data until the end of 2026.
  • UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer labeled the images as unlawful and urged communications regulator Ofcom to consider all possible measures. He stressed that such content will not be tolerated in Britain.
  • Other countries, including France, Malaysia, and India, have also criticized Musk’s platform for the issue.

Official Statements and Safety Measures

Elon Musk addressed the concerns directly on X, warning that users generating illegal content using Grok would face consequences equivalent to uploading unlawful material themselves. X’s official Safety account highlighted the platform’s approach to tackling illegal content, which includes removing offending posts, permanently suspending accounts, and collaborating with governments and law enforcement when necessary.

Current Status and Alternatives

While image generation is now a paid feature on X, Grok still offers free access to these tools through its separate application. The transition to a subscription model on X aims to curb misuse by limiting access to verified paying users.

Summary

  • Grok’s image creation feature is disabled for free users on X due to misuse.
  • Paid subscription is required to access image generation and editing on the platform.
  • Authorities in Europe and elsewhere have condemned the creation of sexualized images involving minors through Grok.
  • Musk and X have pledged to enforce stricter controls and cooperate with regulators.

The move represents a significant policy shift for Grok as it seeks to balance AI innovation with responsible usage and regulatory compliance.
