From January 15, 2026, WhatsApp will block non-Meta AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot, affecting personal and business users

WhatsApp, the widely used messaging app under Meta, is preparing to roll out a new feature that allows users to share status updates exclusively with a selected group of friends.

The feature, called “Close Friends’ Status Updates”, is currently in beta testing for iOS and is expected to be officially announced in the coming weeks. It is designed to give users more control and privacy over the content they share.

According to reports, users will be able to create a private list of chosen contacts directly from WhatsApp’s privacy settings. Once the list is set up, status updates can be shared only with the selected circle. These updates will be distinct in appearance, likely marked with a special indicator or color, while still following WhatsApp’s standard 24-hour lifecycle.

The feature is inspired by Instagram’s “Close Friends” option for stories, offering a more personalized and secure sharing experience. While WhatsApp already allows status visibility settings for all contacts or excludes certain individuals, this new option simplifies and enhances private sharing.

Currently spotted in WhatsApp beta version 25.23.10.80 for iOS, the update is part of WhatsApp’s ongoing strategy to keep its platform competitive by adding user-centric features.

In addition, WhatsApp is testing a voicemail-style shortcut for missed calls. This feature enables users to leave voice messages when a call goes unanswered, currently available to selected Android beta users (version 2.25.23.21).

Together, these developments reflect WhatsApp’s effort to provide greater convenience, personalization, and privacy for its global user base.
