Islamabad – April 25, 2025
Prime Minister of Pakistan has emphasized that transparency must remain the top priority in the ongoing process of privatizing Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), the country’s national flag carrier. Speaking during a high-level meeting on the matter, the premier stated that the privatization must be carried out in a manner that not only protects national interests but also builds public trust and ensures long-term economic viability.

The Prime Minister acknowledged the financial burden PIA has placed on the national exchequer over the years and said that reforms were essential to transform the institution into a sustainable entity. However, he underlined that all procedures related to the privatization must be open, accountable, and in line with international best practices.

“There should be no room for ambiguity or doubt. The entire privatization process must be transparent, and all stakeholders must be kept informed at every stage,” the Prime Minister said.

He also directed relevant authorities to accelerate the restructuring of PIA ahead of its proposed sale, ensuring that operational and financial records are thoroughly audited and up to date.

Officials from the Privatization Commission, the Ministry of Aviation, and economic advisors briefed the Prime Minister on the current status of the privatization roadmap, investor interest, and key regulatory steps being undertaken.

The Prime Minister’s remarks come amid increased scrutiny of the government’s privatization drive, with PIA being one of the most high-profile and politically sensitive entities under consideration. Labor unions, industry experts, and political opposition have raised concerns over transparency and worker protections during the privatization process.

The government reiterated its commitment to addressing such concerns while maintaining that the privatization of loss-making state enterprises like PIA is crucial to stabilizing the economy and reducing the fiscal deficit.
