In a significant move to address financial concerns and retain experienced staff, the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) Board of Directors has granted in-principle approval for a 15% salary increase for its employees.

First Salary Revision in Four Years

This marks the first pay raise in four years, with the last salary revision implemented in 2019. Since then, the country has experienced soaring inflation, severely impacting employees’ purchasing power. The long-overdue adjustment aims to provide financial relief and align wages with the rising cost of living.

A PIA spokesperson confirmed that the salary increase was approved after extensive deliberations, taking into account inflationary pressures and the need to ensure employee welfare. The revision will be cadre-wise, ensuring fair and appropriate salary adjustments across different levels of the workforce.

Retaining Skilled Workforce

Over the years, PIA has faced a steady decline in its workforce, with the total number of employees now reduced to less than 7,000. Many employees have left due to financial constraints and the uncertainty surrounding the airline’s restructuring and privatization process. The salary revision aims to curb talent drain and ensure that experienced professionals remain with the national flag carrier.

Long-Pending Issue Addressed

The issue of salary increments had been pending for a long time, with multiple requests made to the Privatization Commission and financial advisors for approval. With the airline undergoing restructuring and facing financial challenges, salary revisions had been continuously delayed. However, this recent decision marks a major breakthrough, addressing employees’ long-standing financial concerns.

Looking Ahead

The salary hike is expected to improve employee morale and productivity while strengthening PIA’s ability to maintain an efficient and skilled workforce. As the airline continues its privatization and restructuring process, ensuring employee satisfaction will be crucial for a smooth transition and sustainable operations in the future.
