LONDON: Sadiq Khan, the son of a Pakistani bus driver, has been knighted in the New Year Honours list following his unprecedented third term as mayor of London. Sir Sadiq described the accolade as a deeply humbling experience.

“I couldn’t have dreamed when growing up on a council estate in south London that I would one day be mayor of London,” he said. “It’s the honor of my life to serve the city I love. I will continue to build a fairer, safer, greener, and more prosperous London for all its communities.”

From Humble Beginnings to Political Milestones

Born in Tooting, South London, to Pakistani parents, Sir Sadiq’s journey began as a human rights lawyer before his election as MP for Tooting in 2005. During his parliamentary career, he served as a junior minister under Gordon Brown and as shadow justice secretary under Ed Miliband.

In 2016, Sir Sadiq made history by defeating Conservative candidate Zac Goldsmith to become the first Muslim mayor of a major Western city, succeeding Boris Johnson. His leadership was reaffirmed with two subsequent victories, making him the first to secure three terms as mayor of London.

Legacy and Achievements

As mayor, Sir Sadiq has championed public transport reforms, including naming and color-coding London Overground railway lines. His tenure also saw him navigating high-profile disputes, particularly with former US President Donald Trump.

Their feud began in 2015 when Sir Sadiq criticized Trump’s proposal to ban Muslims from entering the US. The conflict escalated over the years, with Trump labeling him a “stone-cold loser” during a 2019 visit to the UK. Sir Sadiq dismissed the remarks, emphasizing his focus on London rather than playground-level politics.

Fighting Fake News and Hate Speech

Reflecting on his most recent election campaign, Sir Sadiq credited Geo News for countering misinformation and raising awareness about critical issues. “During door-to-door canvassing, people mentioned Geo News as a reliable source,” he noted. “In an age of fake news, it’s crucial to call out racism, hate, and Islamophobia.”

A Symbol of Hope and Resilience

Sir Sadiq’s knighthood celebrates not only his political achievements but also his enduring commitment to London’s diverse communities. He continues to inspire many as a symbol of inclusivity and progress in one of the world’s most dynamic cities.
