Pakistan has secured its position as the world’s third-largest sesame exporter, with annual exports surpassing $1 billion, according to Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain.
The sesame sector has experienced extraordinary growth, expanding by 455% over the past five years. Annual production now stands at 1.119 million tons. Export volumes have increased by 327%, reaching 0.760 million tons, while revenue has risen by 366% to an impressive $1.073 billion.
The minister credited this success to the National Oilseeds Enhancement Program (NOEP), which boosted sesame cultivation and industry infrastructure. He emphasized the importance of advancing processing technologies, adding value to products, and exploring international markets to sustain growth.
In parallel, Pakistan and Turkiye have strengthened their agricultural ties under the Strategic Economic Framework (SEF). Both nations agreed to enhance trade by adhering to international Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) standards and fostering Turkish investment in Pakistan’s agriculture and livestock industries.
An actionable plan focusing on technology transfer, disease control, and increased agricultural trade will drive economic opportunities and productivity in both countries.
