ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is hosting the main session of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit today, where leaders from China, Russia, India, Iran, and several Central Asian states are convening to discuss critical issues such as trade, security, and regional cooperation.
The two-day summit brings together key figures, including the prime ministers of China, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Iran’s first vice president. India’s external affairs minister is also in attendance. On Tuesday evening, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif welcomed the dignitaries at a formal dinner, including Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.
To ensure the safety of the high-profile attendees, the Pakistani government has declared a three-day public holiday in Islamabad, closing schools and businesses. Security measures include troop deployments and roadblocks, with alternative routes provided for residents.
Today, Prime Minister Sharif will chair the Council of Heads of Government meeting, delivering the opening remarks, followed by statements from other leaders. Key documents outlining the summit’s outcomes will be signed, with closing remarks by Sharif. Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and SCO Secretary-General Zhang Ming will present the final communiqué.
During bilateral meetings on the first day of the summit, Sharif discussed trade, investment, and regional connectivity with Central Asian leaders. Pakistan, amid challenging economic conditions, seeks to leverage its strategic location as a trade hub connecting China and Central Asia with global markets.
Authorities continue to maintain stringent security measures throughout the capital, ensuring the smooth conduct of the summit.
