COLOMBO – Dhammika Niroshana, the former captain of Sri Lanka’s under-19 cricket team, was tragically shot dead in front of his family at his home on Tuesday night, according to international media reports.

The incident occurred at Niroshana’s residence in Kanda Mawatha, Ambalangoda. At the time of the attack, the former cricketer’s wife and two children were present. The unknown assailants fled the scene immediately after the shooting.

Upon receiving the information, a police team arrived at the scene promptly. Niroshana’s body was subsequently taken to the hospital for an autopsy.

During his youth cricket career, Niroshana led a team that included notable players such as Farvez Maharoof, Angelo Mathews, and Upul Tharanga. Despite his promising start, he retired from cricket at the young age of 20.

Between 2001 and 2004, Niroshana played 12 first-class games and 8 List A matches for the Galle Cricket Club. He accumulated over 300 runs and took 19 wickets during his active cricket career. Niroshana made his debut for Sri Lanka’s U19 team in 2000.

The cricketing community and Niroshana’s fans are mourning his untimely death, which has sent shockwaves across the nation. Authorities are conducting an investigation to apprehend the culprits responsible for this heinous crime.
