Wheat scandal: PM Shehbaz Sharif suspends four officers

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has taken significant steps in the investigation of the wheat import scandal.

Sources indicate that the prime minister has ordered the removal of four responsible officers from their positions in the Ministry of National Food Security due to poor planning and negligence.

Details reveal that the prime minister has approved relevant action against former federal secretary of national food security, Muhammad Asif. Additionally, other officers to be suspended include former director general of plant protection, AD Abid, Food Security Commissioner Dr. Wasim, Director Sohail, and Punjab Director of Food Security Imtiaz Gopang.

This development follows Prime Minister Shehbaz’s establishment of a probe committee led by Secretary of the Cabinet Division, Kamran Ali Afzal, to investigate the wheat scandal.

The wheat scandal revolves around Pakistan’s wheat sector, which has been embroiled in controversy due to the recent import of 3.4 million metric tons of wheat by the caretaker government. This import deal, despite a surplus of wheat in the country, has incurred a significant loss of over Rs300 billion to the national exchequer, prompting concerns regarding the government’s decision-making process and accountability.
