Skardu Airport, which is located in the stunning Karakoram mountains in Pakistan, is going to have some important improvements. The Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has decided to make Skardu Airport meet international standards. Their main aim is to bring more tourists to this area and make it even better.

Director General of CAA, Khaqan Murtaza, recently shared insights into the ambitious plans for Skardu Airport. According to Murtaza, the CAA is actively working on implementing an open sky policy for Skardu Airport to stimulate tourism. This policy aims to enhance accessibility to the picturesque northern regions of Pakistan, even during the winter months.

One of the notable developments in this initiative is the substantial upgrade of Skardu Airport to align with international aviation standards. Murtaza emphasized the CAA’s commitment to making the northern regions of Pakistan a central hub for tourism, showcasing their natural beauty and cultural richness to the world.

A key turning point in this endeavor was the visit of Saudi aviation officials to Pakistan, where they were captivated by the mesmerizing landscapes of the northern region. As a result, Saudi authorities have expressed keen interest in launching direct flights to Skardu, further expanding the region’s accessibility to international travelers.

To facilitate the influx of travelers, Skardu Airport now boasts refueling facilities for aircraft. Additionally, steps are being taken to enhance oil storage capacity for aircraft operating in the northern regions, ensuring a seamless and efficient travel experience.

Skardu itself is renowned for its breathtaking scenery, making it an ideal destination for adventurers, nature enthusiasts, and history buffs alike. The upgrade of Skardu Airport aligns with Pakistan’s broader efforts to promote tourism in the northern areas, ultimately boosting the economy and providing tourists with a gateway to unparalleled natural beauty and cultural experiences.

An important milestone in Skardu’s journey towards international recognition was achieved in August 2023 when Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) inaugurated the first international flight to the airport. Flight 234, originating from Dubai, touched down in Skardu, marking the airport’s official international status. Passengers on this historic flight were warmly welcomed with the iconic traditional caps of Gilgit-Baltistan, a thoughtful gesture that celebrated the rich local culture.

In a vibrant display of pride and excitement, the airport authorities paid tribute to this significant moment by presenting a water cannon salute to the arriving aircraft. This symbolic gesture signified the beginning of a new chapter for Skardu Airport as it embarks on its journey to become an international aviation hub and a gateway to the enchanting landscapes of northern Pakistan.
