Caretaker Prime Minister, Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, has embarked on a five-day visit to the United States to attend the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, he announced on Monday, becoming the country’s first caretaker PM to address the UN’s main deliberative, policymaking, and representative part.

A neutral caretaker administration oversees national elections in Pakistan, which must be held within 90 days of the dissolution of the parliament’s lower chamber, which in this case implies early November. However, polls will be delayed until March while the election regulator creates hundreds of new seats based on a new population count.

Before Kakar, no Pakistani caretaker prime minister had ever addressed the UN General Assembly. The annual session will be held from September 19 to September 26 this year. On September 22, Kakar will speak during the session.

“Setting off for a pivotal 5-day trip to the United States,” the prime minister announced on social media.

“Excited to represent Pakistan at the 78th #UNGA, where we will discuss global climate challenges, engage with world leaders, and explore insights with international media and top think tanks.”

The prime minister will elaborate on government steps to consolidate Pakistan’s economic recovery, as well as efforts to mobilise domestic and global investments, according to Pakistani state media. On the margins of the UNGA proceedings, Kakar will also meet with world leaders.
