Pakistan Railways sets sights on solar energy to save billions

Pakistan Railways has launched an ambitious plan to switch its enormous network of stations, offices, workshops, and factories to solar systems in an effort to save costs and boost sustainability.

According to Ministry of Railways officials, the initial phase of this eco-friendly overhaul is expected to save the department roughly Rs1.8 billion.

This first phase will include 99 formations, which will include important railway stops, nine divisional headquarters, and critical offices.

Pakistan Railways intends to recruit the expertise of the National Engineering Services Pakistan (NESPAK), a renowned body in the field of engineering and infrastructure development, to carry out this gigantic project. Their collaboration is expected to help Pakistan Railways’ smooth transition to solar energy.

The move to embrace solar energy is a deliberate reaction to reduce financial strain on Pakistan Railways, which has been dealing with economic issues. The department hopes to considerably lower its energy expenditure by utilising solar energy.

In addition to this green programme, Pakistan Railways is taking steps to address the country’s chronic energy issue and rising power rates. In order to conserve energy and optimise resource utilisation, railway management has enacted a policy barring officers from using air conditioning before 11 a.m. daily.

Muhammad Ali, the caretaker Minister of Energy and Petroleum, has stated the government’s steadfast support for solar net metering, emphasising the need for sustainable energy alternatives.

He also stated that the government is working on implementing special pricing for industrial power consumers by October 31, 2023, in order to reduce their financial burden.

Furthermore, the government is actively designing a winter tariff structure in order to provide assistance to energy customers. In order to dissuade and punish individuals who commit electricity theft, the government has implemented harsh procedures and actions.

The transformation of Pakistan Railways to solar energy not only presents the department as an environmental steward but also promises major monetary benefits, reflecting a broader trend towards sustainability and efficiency in the country’s infrastructure development endeavors.
