Power tariff likely to go up by Rs2.07/unit

The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has recommended the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) increase the electricity cost by Rs2.07 paisa due to fuel price adjustments.

If approved, the rate increase will be for one month due to a fuel price change for electricity consumption in July. On August 30, the Nepra will hear the petition.

The CPPA petitioned the Nepra, claiming that hydropower plants contributed 37.18 percent of total power generation, coal-fired plants generated 14.68 percent, natural gas generated 07.61 percent, and nuclear plants generated 14.29 percent.

The increase will place an additional burden on electricity consumers who are already paying exorbitant rates.

Earlier in July, at the request of the federal government, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) announced a huge hike in power base tariffs of up to Rs7.50 per unit.

The power regulatory authority stated in a notification that the higher pricing would go into effect on July 1, 2023.

Lifeline customers will be spared from the current power tariff increase. The protected users who use 200 units per month will not be affected by the basic rate increase.
