To meet the nation’s demand, the federal government spent $902 million ($0.9 billion) on the import of wheat last year.

In order to meet local demand, the government imported 2.4 million tonnes of wheat worth $902 million during the course of the previous year, from August 2021 to July 2022, according to sources in the Commerce Ministry.

According to sources who shared the monthly breakdown of the wheat import cost, Pakistan bought 0.2116 million tonnes of wheat from the global market for $107 million (Rs 23.5 billion) in July. According to the data, the government bought wheat on the foreign market for Rs. 111 per kilogram (kg).

The government didn’t buy any wheat from the world market in the months of April and May.

In March, approximately 0.112 million tonnes of wheat worth $42.5 million (Rs 7.638 billion) were imported, with the average price per kilogram for the month being Rs. 68.

The import bill for wheat and other food commodities demonstrates how rapidly food imports have increased in recent years. During the most recent fiscal year alone, the nation imported food commodities worth $9 billion, including wheat, ghee, oil, sugar, and other things.
