The two state-owned companies, SNGPL and SSGC, will spend a total of Rs 113.899 billion on improving their gas transmission networks across the country during the current fiscal year.

“The Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) and Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) have planned to invest Rs 27,669 million on transmission projects, Rs 77,484 million on distribution projects and Rs 8,746 million on other projects bringing the total investment of Rs 113,899 million during the fiscal year 2022-23,” according to an official document.

During the first nine months of the 2021-22 fiscal year, the companies gasified 108 villages and towns at their respective networks, and laid 67 kilometers of gas transmission pipelines.

Additionally, they provided around 259,212 additional gas connections, including 257,644 domestic, 1473 commercial, and 95 industrial connections, as compared to 304,573 connections during the same period in 2020-21.

The document states that approximately 736,060 new consumers are expected to be supplied with gas, subject to approval/revision by OGRA during FY2023.

Additionally, it notes that the indigenous supply of natural gas has declined by around 5 per cent, with its contribution to the total primary energy supply mix of the country being recorded at 33.1 per cent.

According to the available statistics, Pakistan has an extensive gas network comprising more than 13,513 km of transmission pipelines, 155,679 km of distribution pipelines and 41,231 km of service pipelines, catering for the requirements of millions of consumers.

The number of consumers has increased from 10.3 million to more than 10.7 million over the year.
