Ah, the Emmys! If there’s one award show comparable in size and magnitude to a baseball glove, besides the Golden Globes that is, it’s the Emmys. And this year with the pandemic ridden trauma that everyone has been dealing with in their own fortuitous way, the 72nd Emmy Award Show to be aired live on ABC Sept 20, 2020 would be like the room full of glistening golden straws that would make Rumpelstiltskin do a happy twirl dance.
The categories for nominations as always are majorly divided among the following categories: Comedy, Drama, Limited Series & Movie, Reality, and Variety. Seems to me that it happens to be the most popular kind of programming we like on our telly tubes. Among the nomination tussle, the two major programming networks that are going to head to the battle ground are Netflix and HBO, it appears to be.
Emmys – The Nominations
The HBO Limited Series Watchmen embraced the world of television as a staunch contender. Created by Damon Lindelof, Watchmen scored the most nominations of any show this year – a total of 26, including ones for all its cast, and more. Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel huffed in the second contention with a total of 20, followed by Succession and Ozark with 18 nominations each. Pop TV’s Schitt’s Creek, which bid us all adieu by airing its season finale at the beginning of this year, was the leader of the pack as far as major acting comedy categories go, as well as for Outstanding Comedy Series. Its cast comprised of Dan Levy, and one of my all-time favorites Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara, along with Annie Murphy all received acting nominations.
Showbiz Wiz George Lucas’ film’s first Star Wars live-action series called The Mandalorian also gathered a total of 15 nominations. Actor Giancarlo Esposito earned an acting nomination for his guest role. It doesn’t surprise me one bit to share that the conglomerate giant Netflix reigned supremo with the most nominations for a network with 160 nominations, 42 more than what they earned the year before. HBO came in second with 137.
Scheduled to Air Live on Sept. 20
For me, the most titillating bit yet might be this year’s host, Jimmy Kimmel. Ever since his days as the anchor on Comedy Central’s The Man Show I have witnessed his career grow like a magnum opus, and his humor gets crispier and his punches get funnier. I admire Jimmy Kimmel for his career graph in the Industry and I would love to see him host the 72nd Emmys this year. So, glue your virtual TV sets accordingly as the grand affair is scheduled to air live Sunday, Sept. 20 at 8 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, USA, and 5 p.m. Pacific Standard Time, USA on a really awesome telly channel called ABC. I raise a toast in anticipation!
