The World Bank has agreed to provide Rs. 56.697 billion to Tarbela Ghazi Hydropower Generation Complex for the installation of 300MW Floating Solar Photovoltaic (FPV) on Water Bodies.

The Central Development Working Party will examine a summary for the installation of 300MW Floating Solar Photovoltaic (FPV) on Water Bodies in the Tarbela Ghazi Hydropower Generation Complex today (Wednesday), an official source told ProPakistani.

The project’s overall cost is Rs. 59.775 billion, and the World Bank has committed to providing a soft loan to fund the 300 MW Solar FPV Project at Ghazi Barotha Ponds. The Bank would grant an Rs. 56.697 billion soft loans.

The project’s goal is to install a 300 MW floating solar photovoltaic (FPV) project on two water bodies, 150 MW at Ghazi Barotha Forebay and 150 MW at Ghazi Barrage Head pond, to increase electricity supply during peak hours and capacity-strengthening through large-scale demonstrations of solar-hydropower hybrid operation.

However, various reservations have been made about the project, according to the source, and it has been suggested that generation capacity development be driven by the private sector in the IPP model.

Furthermore, State-Owned Entities (SOEs) should not take up too much space. It has also been suggested that WAPDA concentrate its available resources on hydropower and water resource development in the country.

The responsibility of renewable/solar power project development should be led by the Alternate Energy Development Board (AEDB) not WAPDA, the source said.
