  • The US government imposed sanctions on 11 companies that it claimed were implicated in human rights abuses in China’s Muslim Northwestern region of Xinjiang.
  • Xinjiang is already into a series of conflicts including human rights and trade that have caused ties with the US to deteriorate in the recent decades.
  • The Commerce Department said that that addition of the 11 companies shall limit their access to US goods and technology. However, it gave no details of what and how shall goods be affected.

The US government imposed sanctions on 11 companies that it claimed were implicated in human rights abuses in China’s Muslim Northwestern region of Xinjiang. China here on Tuesday said that it shall be taking unspecified necessary measures in return.  US has also further imposed sanctions on 4 Chinese officials over the very same accusations.

One of the companies supplies screens and lenses to Apple, Samsung and other technology companies. Another one as identified by investigations in 2018 and 2020 was implicated in forced labor. Xinjiang is already into a series of conflicts including human rights and trade that have caused ties with the US to deteriorate in the recent decades.

China

A shipment from the Hetian Haolin Hair accessories Company, was seized by the US customs authorities on suspicion of forced labor. People who worked for the company, told the AP detainees that they were forced to work where they were. The company sells sportswear to US universities and sports teams. The Commerce Department said that that addition of the 11 companies shall limit their access to US goods and technology. However, it gave no details of what and how shall goods be affected.
